This lively discussion will focus on the contribution that Jewish culture, composition and performance has made to classic opera. The program will provide a panoramic view with operas and classic vocal works that span nearly three centuries and explore the old testament subjects used by Handel and Rossini showing Jews as heroes and leaders.  The conversation will also touch on the contribution that Jewish opera composers such as Meyerbeer and Offenbach have made to the repertoire. We’ll discuss the careers of three great Jewish opera singers, Jan Peerce, Richard Tucker and Robert Merrill and listen to works from the Jewish liturgy that Richard Tucker recorded. Finally, we’ll recount the use of opera to reflect the search for a Jewish homeland as represented in Verdi’s opera, Nabucco.
